Ask the Trainer: 10 Minutes 3x a Day or 30 Minutes, What's More Effective?

I thought this was an excellent question! Yes, 10 minutes three times a day can be just effective as 30 minutes!

But you have to make it work, no time for lolly-gagging. If that’s all the time you have, you better MAKE IT WORK! Calories burned is calories burned, right? And if you burn 300 calories walking/jogging on the treadmill, then walking/jogging 10 minutes 3 times a day, should get you a near equal (if not higher) calorie burn.

How is that possible? For me, if I only had 10 minutes, I would go all out, full force and jog for 10 minutes, versus for me (and with many others) jogging for 30 minutes straight is tough and not doable.

So with a 1-2 minute warm-up, I would follow that with a 8 minutes straight jog as fast as my little legs could go, then cool down for one minute, and make sure I get a couple of stretches in. Maybe I do 10 in the morning, 10 in the afternoon, and 10 at night. That’s my MINIMUM of 30 minutes of cardio I suggests everyone does daily.

Here are a couple of other 10 minute workouts you can scatter through-out the day:
  • Stationary bike, mine is in my living room, so I can do 10 minutes at a time while watching TV
  • Treadmill walk/jog. Start off slow, but then continue to increase your speed every minute going as fast as you can go. For the last minute, go back to a moderate pace.
  • Dancing, cut on some music and dance like a rock star for 10 minutes
  • Turbo Kick/Fire has a few short videos
  • Hip Hop Abs has an awesome 5-minute workout, make sure and do a 2 minute warm-up and 3 minute cool down, even if it’s just walking in place.
  • Tae Bo has an 8 minute workout
  • Walk stairs! I worked on the 16th floor once, and on breaks, we would go down and up…sometime this took longer than 10 minutes, but whew, this is a workout!
  • Create a 10-minute bootcamp style workout, running, jumping jacks, burpees, lunges, squats, shadow boxing, whatever you like.
  • Jump rope. This is a tough one, but do three 3-minute increments, and in between do 25 push ups. You will feel the BURN!
  • Strength training can be done in 10 minutes too! Do push-ups, lunges and reverse crunches for 30 seconds each. Repeat this sequence for 10 minutes. Alternatively, perform triceps push-ups, body weight squats and Russian twists for 30 seconds each. Repeat this sequence for 10 minutes.

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 86-87: Sometimes I feel like dancing!

That's about what my workout was yesterday and today.  Yesterday it was all about Michael Jackson on the Wii, today, MJ again but also some Hop Hop Hustle and Beyonce Move Your Body.

So sweaty!

Who said dancing wasn't a workout?? They lied!  I mean, anything that gets your heart rate up is a workout. And it's a total body workout because when you dance your should use your whole body.  From the top of your head to the bottom of your feet.  Even when I do MJ the Experience, I am not just aiming for the points I am aiming to dance and get my body moving.  I can't keep still in between parts where there are no movements.  My feel or hands or in constant motion!

Where do I get this energy?  I work out at night, 9:00 pm preferred, but sometimes as late as 10 p.m.  I just have to get it in, so if I'm late, I'm late but I'm gonna workout.

And dancing for me is not like a workout.  It's about fun to me.  Many people say, well, I can't do this or I can't do that.  Have you tried?  Pop in a CD and just dance! No one is looking at you if you do it at  the comforts of your home!  I make up dances to my favorites songs and do that 3-4 times and it's a workout.

Yesterday workout time: 30 minutes

Today workout time: 45 minutes

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 82: Move Your Body

So motivated by Beyonce's "Move Your Body" workout, I was doing the dang thing tonight!

I did it FIVE times in a row, no breaks. And since it is 4 minutes long, that is 20 minutes.  I also did about 20 minutes of MJ.  And you don't think dancing is a workout??  WHAT! Stop playing, right?  Dance for twenty minutes straight and then come back and tell me you didn't break a sweat.

Try this workout.  I beg you to.

Here are the mission moves:
Mission 1: Run, knees up, then turn to the side
Mission 2: Shuffle side-to-side
Mission 3: Dougie
Mission 4: Jump rope side to side
Mission 5: Salsa move
Mission 6: Running man
Mission 7: Dancehall
Mission 8: Snap to the beat

Pretty easy.  Everything else if fun too.  Four minutes, so do it over and over again to get a workout.  And really put yourself into it.  Nobody has to see you, but YOU!!

Workout time: 40 minutes

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 80-81: Just get up and do something!

You have those days...you know what days I'm talking about.  Days when you just don't wanta!

I have those days.  Those days I just don't wanta!  Exercise, that is.

But guess what, you Betta! How hard is it to get in 30 minutes day? I mean, really, NO EXCUSES!!  Even if you can't take it all out, do something!!  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Wake up thirty minutes early and hop on a treadmill, bike, pop in a tape and have it done for the day.
  • Take 30 minutes of your lunch break and go for a walk.
  • How about taking three 10-minutes breaks where you do some serious cardio (jogging, cycling, stairs, whatever, just keep it high intense for 6-7 of those minutes)
  • Right after work, go to the gym and get in your normal workout.
  • No gym membership? Go walking in the park, mall or around your block
  • Invest in workout DVDs and get in 30 minutes whenever it is available to you. Late at night or early morning.
  • Dance like crazy to 5-6 songs totally about 30 minutes (my fave).  No choreography necessary.  Or play some music videos and do tthe dances you love.
  • Play the Wii for 30 minutes, but make sure it is constant motion, so if the game is at a pause or resetting, walk in place, move side to side or something, just DON'T STOP!
  • Chase your kids around with a ball in the backyard (or like me, we do bootcamp drills in my driveway)
Just a few!  And I put some of that to use today!  It was supposed to be Bikini Bootcamp day today, but I just didn't wanta!  It's hardcore and my mind was not right.  But I had to do something!!  Trusty MJ Experience on Wii for like 40 minutes, even beating some of my high scores.  Trust me, I sweated!

Yesterday I did the hardest 43 minutes in awhile, Turbo Kick Cardio Party.  No, the workout is not tough itself, I just "didn't wanta" and had to fight to stick with it.  Somewhere in the middle I found my second wind.  Wierd how that happens.

So lesson for today, "Just get up and do something!"

Workout yesterday: 43 minutes
Workout today: 40 minutes

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 77-78: A little of this, a little of that

Can I just say that my arms are still SORE from the boxing on Monday!

And I did indeed workout yesterday, just could not move my arms to blog about it.  It was Bikini Bootcamp night, but erri uhhh, my arms were telling me no.  I tried my darnest to at least get in 30 minutes, but only 15 and I was DONE.  So maybe what I needed was something easier and way fun.

Wii Zumba Fitness!!  I did that for 20 minutes and was feeling it.  While I was at it, I through in some Just Dance 2, about 10 minutes

workout time: 45 minutes

Today, I just wanted to dance, dance, dance! So I did a bit of Just Dance 2 (10 minutes) and then I wanted to see how long I could go at MJ Experience.  A whole 60 minutes!!  I was trying to earn top stars, but still only 5 stars for Thriller but I have a lot of 4 star routines.

So a little of this, a little of that and I still get my workouts in.  Woo-hoo!

Workout time: 70 minutes

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 74: 100 minute workout

60 minutes on the Wii MJ the Experience! I can never get bored with this, BUT I may be giving it a break for awhile just so I can get different workouts in.  If I do it at all, it will be for fun and not fitness.  When I play with the kids, it's more like fun...although, I get more competitive with my moves because I want to win.

30 minutes of Bikini Bootcamp! Wow!  Even though I did 60 minutes of it TWICE last week, my body was not feeling it today...maybe because I did MJ first.  All I know is, I listen to my body when it wants to quit.  I think I did a little more than 30 but I'm rounding down (I took several breaks)

10 minutes of Hop Hop Hustle 5.  And I did this only as a review of sorts. I will be teaching this to some others and had not done it for nearly two weeks.  I will add 10-20 minutes of Hustle everyday just so it stays fresh in my mind.

Total workout time: 100 minutes

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 71: Wii Zumba Fitness

This was my second time doing this workout and oh boy! It does NOT get any easier! It does get more fun!

Every time you are doing this you learn a bit more of the steps and so therefore can put more into it.  I did the same 20 minute workout and this time, I was not dreading it toward the end! I actually wanted more.  But I put in Just Dance 2.

Zumba is fun because I like to dance.  And at the same time, it's a workout!! It does not get any better than that.  Love, love, love it! MJ the Experience is still my fave.

I always say, if your workout is not fun, you won't want to do it! So find what it is you LOVE to do and it does not feel like a chore.  If you like to walk, walk every day and a lot! If you like to run, run like the wind! If you like to dance (like me) then dance, dance, dance the night away! If you like to ride a bike, just do it!  If you like traditional type aerobics classes, just sign-up for it and go for it.

Make each workout a party!

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 69: Michael Jackson the Experience

I am TOTALLY addicted to this game!

3 hours I did this game with little breaks in between! It was actually when I stopped to do Just Dance 2 that the dances were putting me into overdrive (and my kids play better at that one than MJ so I had to go hard).  I LOVE every routine, even the easy (slow) ones where in the videos he did not dance much so they had to come up with some simple moves.

My fave may be Dirty Diana, but I also like Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean because who did not try to imitate those dance moves!  But then, all the Off the Wall album songs would be next. OMG, what can I say. Love Michael! His music! His dancing! Yep, I have it bad.  And I am a true fan, not fair-weather, I always was on his side, through it all.

I wish I knew how many calories I burned. At least 1,000! I know I weighed myself when I got home because I felt bloated from eating pretzels, and then ate a salad, played the Wii for 3 hours, weighed myself again because I knew I dropped lots of water weight and yep, down 2 whole pounds.  So I am drinking heck of water right now to hydrate my body.  So trust me, this is a real, REAL workout!

I'll be raving about this workout in many more blogs I'm sure.

Total workout: 3 hours! Woohooooo!!

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 65: Some of this, some of that

That's how my workout was tonight.  Some of this, some of that, a little of this and a whole lotta fun!!

Since I bought 3 new Wii games online yesterday, I figured I better get the dust off that things. I did Wii Fit until the games arrives.  Hope they really inspire me to do more.

As if...as if I don't do a lot anyway!!  I did 35 minutes of WiiFit.  Then I decided to do Hip Hop ABS instead of HUSTLE, just because, I have to keep it interested.  Not that I am bored with Hustle because I have like a gazillion workouts!  But look at Shaun T and those abs!!

I did a 45 minute workout of that. I absolutely love, love, love HHA for different reasons than I love, love, love HHH. HHA takes its name serious, it works the ABS! Man, I was really feeling it.  It's like doing 1,000 crunches standing.  Love it!

And if that was not enough, I did a 20 minute Turbo Jam workout, why, just because I can!!  I have all this energy, I probably could have done a longer workout but I am also working on getting to bed at a decent time.

Total workout: 100 minutes!!

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 63: Plan big

The plan was to do a double workout. Two 60-minute workouts for 120 minutes.

Welllll...

I did not get home till late and still had LOTS of chores to do.

But a 60 minute workout ain't bad either!  I decided to do the last Hip Hop Hustle I had not tried, HHH 7.  It was not bad at all, I liked it, but I did 45 minutes and that was enough.  I wanted to do something I knew through and through.  I put in the CD to The Show 5 and did that 3 times in a row.  I followed that with free style to one song and then a cool down.

Total workout time: 60 minutes.

Tomorrow I go for 120.

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 58: Hip Hop Hustle 1 on a new level

I had the fan Hustle 1 workout and had done it multiple times, but now I do it to learn the moves exactly and memorization.  Next I learn how to cue to teach others this awesome workouts.  I guess this was the Hip Hop Hustle workout that started it all!

I pretty much have it down, but I keep watching the rehearsal and each time I learn a tidbit more.  Chalene's my teacher and she keeps me on my toes.  maybe I add an extra twist, or dip a bit lower or perfect a difficult move....it's always something.  Love it!!

If you think this is just another dance workout, TRY IT!  You sweat like you are running on the treadmill at a 10!!  I mean, if you are doing it the way you are supposed to do.  Most know that I am a Hip Hop Abs with Shaun T junkie...I have not done that in weeks!!  HHH has become my new addiction.

I think Hip Hop Abs DOES work the abs more than Hip Hop Hustle....BUT, this is more dancy while getting a great workout as well.  And you don't have to worry about doing it perfect, you still get a great workout.

It may seem difficult to the nondancer (but then in that case, so does Hip Hop Abs), but the first few times, just learn the moves. Every time you do it you get better and put more energy on it!  My fave moves:

The Dorothy-because it's just so cool looking.

Step Knee-for the energy you can put into this!  High or low, it's awesome

The grapevine-no, not just the basic grapevine from the 70s, this is the jazzed up grapevine.  There are 2 versions of it throughout all the HHH workouts.  There's the main one, with a dip in the middle that we were tested on in Instructor training.  Then there is the "crazy legs" one that I love, love, LOVE in Hustle 5.

The Hammer-not a signature move, but I love it.  There are various moves that are called "the hammer" but they all include pumping of the fist.

Anything where there's booty shaking!!  C'mon, who doesn't like to get buck!!

I did 65 minutes sore ankle and all.  Woo-hoo!

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 56: No not really, but listen...

What happened was....

I totally forget to blog!  Have I been working out??  Yes and no.  Some days I do, some days I don't.  So I figured today I would pick things back up where I left out.  Rather I blog these 100 days in a row or not, I WILL blog about 100 days of execise.

And so, it's day 56.  What has been going on? Well, last weekend I attended Hip Hop Hustle AND Turbo Kick Instructor trainings.  Go ahead, read my old blogs, I discussed it before.

It was a BLAST!!  Both tough but I made it through standing.  I love both formats, but what i really learned is that I am in LOVE with Hip Hop Hustle even more.  It's the energy that is involved.  It's like...every time I hear some music I want to do those HHH signature moves.  I'm in the car, listening to the Hustle music CD and doing the dance moves in my head (and sometimes actually trying to do it while driving).  It is that addictive.

Sooooo...if after all my million and one blogs you have NOT checked out Hip Hop Hustle, what are you waiting for.  better yet, wait real soon and maybe I'll be coming to a class near you!

Workout today: 50 minutes of Hip Hop Hustle 5, 15 minutes of Hip Hop Hustle 9 (was supposed to be the whole thing but I was tired)

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 55: Hustle Madness

Tonight I did 90 minutes of Hustle! HustleMania is what it is.

First I did Hip Hop Hustle 1, The Show part.  I like this one because it is the easiest of all the Hustle Shows.  But while it may be a little easier, it is way cool!  I especially like the end when the song changes and you do the "What, what? What is up?" move. That whole routine lasted about 30 minutes.

Then next I did Hip Hop Hustle 9.  I like this one for the Beyonce move.  It is also very fast paced and I like the music. At the end she goes into the "stepping" part of the routine, and I had to stop.  Booo!  I had already done 30 minutes and had to move on to the next Hustle.

Hustle 11 of course is my FAVE!  It is to "My Chick Bad," so that's why I really love it.  It's so high energy and I love every move, BUT....

Can you work out when you are dead tired?  I mean sleepy tired! I mean, I could barely keep my eyes open tired.  I mean, I am tripping over my feet tired.  Like the tired where I pushed myself to continue and give my all, but unless I wanted to fall flat on my face, it wasn't happening.  I just wanted to make it to 30 minutes, but 25 and I had to do the cool down.

Counting the warm-up and cool-down it was exactly 90 minutes.  Whew!  So tired.

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 50: Live Hip Hop Hustle & Turbo Kick

I have not been skimping on my workouts just not interesting enough to blog about.

Well, till today!!

I did hip hop Hustle and Turbo Kick in a live class today.  I have not done that in awhile, usually just workout at home.  This was great practice for me and my training in 3 weeks.  Loved it!

Only complaint is that I came late and was stuck in the back.  TK was first and was so cool.  Had not done this in awhile, so it was cool.  I caught on pretty good.  I could not see the instructor so I was winging it and watching others.

Hustle was real fun! She did Hustle 15 which is the newest and is a Nicki Minaj medley of songs.  And those songs are hype and makes you want to dance all day.  The instructor filmed it and I am in it for a few seconds.  Here's the link

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EA6dOmKA-6M&feature=feedu

So I did an hour forty five minutes with those 2 classes, AND then I came home to do TWO more Hustles because my sister wanted to do them with me.  I had fun teaching her the moves and she was actually catching on!  I think I may be a good instructor afterall.   And that was another hour of workout.

Total workout time: 165 minutes!!

50 days down, 50 more to go!

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 47: Back in business

The foot is good so I put in Hip Hop Hustle 11.  Addicted to it!

The foot started to twinge, but no real pain...till later.  It feels like I ran 10 miles on one foot.  Like a burning kind of pain.  Okay, So I will take it easy the next few days.

And MY taking it easy is not like MOST taking it easy.  I still go all out, I just will do something that keeps my foot happy.  I LOVE dancing, but that seems to be what is messing it up right now.  I have two classes I am taking this weekend, Turbo Kick and Hip Hop Hustle, and I want to be able to RAWK it!

Oh, I think I have decided to run a 5K in April.  I haven't even done any training, but um, I think I can do it.  I'm not doing it for a time, I'm doing it to say I can do it.  3.1 miles, to me...right now...sounds EASY, but err-ummm, once I get in a bit of training, I may slap myself in the head for thinking such a thought.  I started training for a 5K 2 years ago and messed my knee up and stopped.  I think I was hitting 3 miles at 50 minutes.  I would love to get it in under 45.  Sheesh!  I better train hard, so foot behave!

60 minute stotal workout today!  Woohoo! Tomorrow I go for more.

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 45: Hip Hop Dance Mix

After 2 days of not getting a workout in, I had to try something new.  10 Minutes Solution Hip Hop Dance Mix was better than expected. I expected some lame type of dancing that may or may not pass as hip hop.

BUT....

I was totally shocked that I indeed liked the moves.  Okay, but first, I did not like that is was just the instructor, Kristin Jacobs, and no extra people working out.  For some reason, I like to have several people there, just so I can see variety.  After all, I did not mind so much because Kristin was doing it!  That girl can dance!

The workout is broken down in five 10-minutes sections.  You can do just one, combine them all, or mix and match as you like.  I attempted to do all five, but only did three.  They are:

Hip Hop Basics: I don;t know what's so basic about it, but they may have been a little low intensity than the others, but still it was great.  I loved it!

Fat Burning Funk: This was more funky moves, and got a little complicated, but still eats to catch on.

Edgy Groove's: This one had me here.  Totally could not get a move, and that's fine, practice makes perfect.  I was so done after this section

the other two are:
Body Re-mix
Cardio Street Heat

The Cardio Street Heat looks fun. I will make sure to do those next times.  I would say this is for a beginner, intermediate or advance, just anyone!  If you like Hip Hop Abs, this will seem tame.  Does not work the core as much.  If you do Hustle like me, this would be a great jump-start to hip hop moves.  In fact, I would suggest this workout to anyone who does not want to pay a boatload of money to get Hip Ho[p Abs or hip Hop Hustle.

I don't remember the price, but it was either $9 or $10 dollars at Walmart.  I will probably do this as a complete 50 minute workout on some days, or do smaller increments as needed.  I like that about the workout.

30 min Hip Hop Dance Mix
10 min Wii

40 minutes.  I need to push for more

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 41: Hustle and Turbo Jam?

Okay, maybe it's all about Chalene Johnson right now.  She really does motivate you.

Too bad my bum foot wasn't having it!  I was aiming for a good 2 hour workout with the combination of 4 workouts, BUT, after 10 minutes of Biggest Loser Jump Start and into Hip Hop Hustle 1, my foot was hurting me so bad!  With the brace, without the brace, it just hurt.  I stopped the workout, rested awhile (fell asleep actually) the started back up.  It felt a little better...for awhile, then hurt again.

I stopped after about 45 minutes.  So next was Turbo Jam.  I just had to finish this! I was hoping it would not stress my foot, it has never in the past, but yep, it was murder.  I had to think of how football players play with worse injuries and fight through the pain.  Okay, sure they see specialist who wrap them, pop them pills, have miracle creams and they are getting paid $$$$$$$$$$$$ so yeah, playing through the pain is nothing to them.

I have really got to take it easy.  It was fine the last few days and just flared up again today.  I'm about to soak it in some Epsom salt, take some pain pills and get a lot of rest! I've never been an athlete, so having these types of injuries bites!

But I still had an awesome workout day!
10 min BL Jump Start
45 min Hustle
45 min Turbo Jam

100 minutes!! My foot is on fire!

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 40: Piyo and Hustle?

You can do it too!

Is this girl out of her flipping mind? I received my Piyo workouts in the mail today and was so excited I wanted to do it immediately (well, not at work, but when I got home).  But I also wanted to do my regularly schedules workout as well

10 minutes BL 30-Day Jump Start Cardio Level 2
70 minutes Hip Hop Hustle 9 (Yep, did the whole thing, both hustles and the show....minus the cool down)
35 min PIYOOOOO! (Imagine me yelling this like the Yahoooo commercials, LOL! This is how I like to say it)
15 min WiiFit plus
20 push ups on Wii (Wooohaaa!)
15 crunches (so wimped out here. I plan on making it to 100 a night, yeah, right!)

What I like about Piyo? The moves really work the core and that's my favorite muscle group to work.  What i don't like is the learning curve to get these moves down.  I spend time looking up at the TV watching the moves, I can't get it correctly.  i know over time, this gets better, so I just kept at it.  Thankfully, they have a person doing modified moves.  I don't know if I can ever get to an advanced level.

Lots of yoga moves I am familiar with (P90X's Yoga X helped a lot for that) and some Pilate's moves as well.  And it was fast! I thought the workout was 60 minutes, so imagine my surprise when it was over after 35.  But hey, any longer and I might have wimped out anyway.

I'm amazed I did the Hustle for 70 minutes!!  WHAT?? This girl is crazy right.  Anyway, when you are having fun, it's not like a workout! I'm spreading the Hustle love wherever I go.  Try it!  Now!

Total workout minutes: 130 minutes!

I'm killing this challenge! Was 30 minutes a day, then 60, so next month I am upping it to 90 minutes a day (and probably will aim for close to 2.5 hours)

100-Day Exercise Challenge Day 39: Pulling out all stops

Just felt like giving it my all today.  Did Wii Fit skateboarding for 30 minutes, and if you know this game, it can be tough, especially for that leg that pushes off on the board.  It's very sore.  I finally made it past the beginner and to the advanced.  Woohoo!

But that wasn't enough!

I want to continue doing the Biggest Loser 30_Day Jump Start, and I figure it's only 10 minutes a day and then I can do something else.  So I did the 10-minute Upper Body section and I liked it.  Because it's so fast, I tried using heavier weights versus when I do P90X.  You also need a stability ball, and I have one, but I used my step and I was fine.  This workout was fast, it worked my arms and shoulders and I got to move on to something else.  I still prefer P90X Shoulders and Arms to really work my upper body.

So after that workout, I put in Hip Hop Hustle 11.  I know, I know!  How many times can I do this?  ONE TRILLION, and I am on only like 10, so I have a ways to go, LOL!  I am able to really rock this out now, added my own "swagger."  I am also starting to call out the cues, at least for the warm-up I did.  The Show I was more into the dancing and making it my own.  I did a whole 60 minutes!

30 min Wii Fit
10 min Biggest Loser Jump Start
60 min Hip Hop Hustle 11
Wii push-up and jack-knife challenge (20 each!)

GO HARD OR GO HOME!

Anyway, my workout tonight.  Even on my bum ankle, I just went for it.  Hustle 11 for 35 minutes and then Hustle 9 for 60 minutes.  My kids were trying their bestest to do this with me, bless their rhythmless hearts.  I thought my daughter had a dancing gene, but man oh man, it's brutal watching them.  I keep trying to teach them, I won't give up!  I just think of it as practicing on two very challenging dancers that want to Hustle!  Hey, I'm not a dancer, but I think I look pretty darn good doing it.

And it's a great workout that does not feel like a workout!!  Come on now! Burn some calories, come Hustle with me!

Woohooooooo!
